Project Abstract

Digital transformation (DT) has emerged as a pivotal driver of performance and competitive advantage for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) navigating dynamic markets and constrained resources. This study investigates the extent to which DT initiatives—encompassing digital platforms, data analytics, cloud-based solutions, automation, and customer-centric digital channels—affect SME operational efficiency, innovation capability, and market competitiveness. Employing a mixed-methods design, the research integrates a cross-sectional survey of 260 SMEs across manufacturing, services, and retail sectors with in-depth case studies of eight high-performing firms to illuminate contextual differences and best practices. The quantitative component analyzes relationships between DT maturity, measured via a validated 4-dimension scale (digital capabilities, data governance, organizational alignment, and technology integration), and key performance indicators (operational efficiency, cost-to-serve, time-to-market, and revenue growth). Mediation analyses assess the role of process reengineering and employee digital skills as channels through which DT translates into performance gains, while moderation tests examine firm size, sector, and digital ecosystem maturity as boundary conditions. The qualitative phase triangulates survey findings, exploring drivers of successful DT adoption, leadership commitment, change management, culture, and stakeholder engagement, as well as barriers such as resource constraints, legacy systems, cybersecurity concerns, and data privacy regulations. The study also evaluates the impact of DT on competitive advantage by examining customer experience, differentiation through personalization, supply chain resilience, and speed-to-innovation. Results reveal a positive and significant association between DT maturity and SME performance, with data-driven decision-making and agile processes emerging as the most influential determinants. Process reengineering and enhanced human capital development partially mediate this relationship, highlighting that technology alone is insufficient without organizational capability building. Sectoral differences indicate that services and retail SMEs gain more pronounced benefits in customer engagement and velocity to market, whereas manufacturing firms leverage DT to optimize operations and supply chain coordination. The research identifies critical enablers, including top management support, cross-functional governance, scalable cloud architectures, interoperable data standards, and continuous learning cultures, alongside persistent barriers such as capital constraints and cybersecurity risk. Policy and managerial implications are drawn, stressing the need for accessible digital funding, shared DT infrastructure, and targeted training programs to accelerate adoption among resource-limited SMEs. The findings contribute to theory by refining the DT-readiness framework for SMEs and extend practical knowledge by offering a roadmap for staged digital transformation aligned with strategic objectives, performance targets, and competitive positioning in a rapidly evolving business landscape.

Project Overview

What This Project Is About

A plain-language overview of how digital changes in technology, processes, and ways of working affect small and medium-sized businesses. The project looks at how using digital tools—from online marketing to cloud systems—can change performance outcomes like sales, efficiency, and customer service, and how these changes create or influence competitive advantage.

The Problem It Addresses

Many SMEs struggle to compete as digital options grow, yet they often lack clear evidence on which digital changes truly boost performance. The project investigates where digital transformation adds value, what barriers SMEs face, and how these choices translate into advantages in markets with high competition.

Objectives of the Project

  1. Identify key digital tools and practices used by SMEs.
  2. Assess how these tools affect performance indicators such as sales, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
  3. Explore how digital changes influence competitive positioning in a specific sector.
  4. Develop a simple framework to help SMEs decide where to invest in digital transformation.

What You Will Do Step by Step

  1. Review existing literature to map common digital tools used by SMEs.
  2. Collect data via surveys or interviews with SME owners/managers.
  3. Analyze ties between digital practices and performance outcomes.
  4. Identify barriers and enablers to successful digital adoption.
  5. Draft a practical decision guide for SME managers.

Expected Outcome

Deliverables include a concise report showing which digital changes reliably improve performance and a simple framework or checklist that SMEs can use to plan digital investments.
