Project Abstract

Digital transformation (DT) has emerged as a critical driver of competitive advantage for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in increasingly dynamic and digitalized markets. This study investigates the impact of DT on SME performance from a strategic management perspective, examining how digital capabilities, organizational structure, leadership, and governance modulate performance outcomes across multiple dimensions including financial performance, innovation, operational efficiency, customer engagement, and resilience. Employing a mixed-methods design, the research combines a cross-sectional survey of 350 SMEs across diverse sectors with in-depth case studies of 8 representative firms to capture both breadth and depth of digital adoption and its strategic implications. The quantitative phase utilizes structural equation modeling to test a comprehensive conceptual framework that links digital maturity, IT alignment, and data-driven decision-making to performance metrics such as return on assets, profitability, market share, and growth velocity, while controlling for firm size, age, and industry dynamism. The qualitative phase explores how firms orchestrate digital initiatives through strategic leadership, change management practices, ecosystem partnerships, and resource orchestration, revealing pathways through which DT translates into superior value creation and risk management. The findings indicate that digital maturity positively influences SME performance, with effects amplified when DT initiatives are integrated into core strategic processes, business models, and customer value propositions. Key mediators include (1) strategic IT-business alignment enabling rapid hypothesis testing and iterative learning; (2) data-driven decision-making enhancing forecasting accuracy, pricing agility, and product development; (3) leadership and change capabilities shaping organizational culture, talent development, and cross-functional collaboration; and (4) governance and risk management frameworks ensuring data privacy, cybersecurity, and compliance. The study also identifies boundary conditions, such as industry turbulence and resource constraints, that shape the strength of DT–performance linkages. Furthermore, the research delineates a typology of SME digital strategies ranging from incremental digitization to disruptive digital business model innovation, illustrating how different strategic configurations yield divergent performance trajectories. Practical implications emphasize the necessity for SMEs to articulate a clear digital strategy aligned with the business model, invest in scalable IT infrastructure, build data competencies, and cultivate leadership that champions change and learning. The study contributes to the strategic management literature by integrating DT with core theories of resource-based view, dynamic capabilities, and organizational ambidexterity, offering a nuanced understanding of how SMEs can harness digital technologies to enhance competitive advantage in resource-constrained environments. Policymakers and industry associations are provided with actionable insights on targeted support programs, such as affordable digital upskilling, accessible finance for tech investments, and frameworks for secure data governance, to accelerate sustainable SME performance improvements in the digital age.

Project Overview

What This Project Is About
A plain-language overview of how digital tools and processes can change how small and medium enterprises operate, compete, and grow. The project examines what digital transformation means for SMEs, how management decisions drive adoption, and how this affects overall business performance from a strategic viewpoint.

The Problem It Addresses
Many small firms struggle to adopt digital technologies due to costs, skills gaps, and uncertain benefits. This project identifies which digital changes most influence performance and why some SMEs succeed while others lag, helping managers prioritize investments and policies that support growth and resilience.

Objectives of the Project

  1. Explain key digital transformation concepts in plain terms.
  2. Identify which digital changes most affect SME performance (e.g., sales, efficiency, customer engagement).
  3. Assess how strategic management decisions influence successful adoption.
  4. Provide a practical framework for SME leaders to plan digital initiatives.

What You Will Do Step by Step

  1. Review existing literature on digital transformation and SME performance.
  2. Develop a simple framework linking digital initiatives to strategic outcomes.
  3. Collect data through surveys or interviews with SME managers.
  4. Analyze data to identify patterns and key drivers of success.
  5. Present findings with practical recommendations for managers.

Expected Outcome

A clear, actionable understanding of which digital strategies most improve SME performance and how managers can implement them with limited resources. The project should yield practical guidelines, a decision-ready framework, and insights for policy support to foster SME growth through digital tools.
