Project Abstract

Project This project aims to explore the potential of Open Educational Resources (OERs) in enhancing the quality and accessibility of Library and Information Science (LIS) education. Open Educational Resources are digital learning materials that are freely available and can be used, modified, and shared by educators and students worldwide. In the rapidly evolving landscape of higher education, the integration of OERs into LIS curricula holds immense promise for improving the learning experience, fostering collaboration, and democratizing access to knowledge. The importance of this project lies in the recognition that traditional LIS education often faces challenges in keeping pace with the dynamic changes in the information landscape. The proliferation of digital technologies, the emergence of new information formats, and the increasing demand for specialized skills have created a need for more flexible and adaptive educational approaches. By harnessing the power of OERs, this project aims to address these challenges and enhance the quality of LIS education. The primary objectives of this project are threefold 1) to assess the current state of OER adoption and implementation in LIS programs across various institutions, 2) to identify best practices and strategies for effectively integrating OERs into LIS curricula, and 3) to develop a comprehensive framework for the creation, curation, and dissemination of OER-based educational resources in the LIS field. To achieve these objectives, the project will employ a multi-pronged approach involving literature reviews, surveys, and case studies. The research team will conduct a comprehensive analysis of existing OER initiatives and their impact on LIS education, both nationally and internationally. This analysis will provide valuable insights into the barriers, challenges, and success factors associated with OER integration. Furthermore, the project will engage with LIS faculty, instructional designers, and librarians to identify their perceptions, needs, and preferences regarding the use of OERs. This input will inform the development of a framework that outlines effective strategies for the seamless integration of OERs into LIS curricula, addressing aspects such as content curation, instructional design, and assessment. A crucial component of this project will be the creation and curation of a centralized repository of high-quality OER-based educational resources in the LIS domain. This repository will serve as a comprehensive and accessible platform for educators, students, and practitioners to discover, access, and adapt relevant learning materials. The project team will work closely with LIS educators and subject matter experts to ensure the quality, relevance, and adaptability of the resources. The expected outcomes of this project include the following 1) a detailed assessment of the current state of OER adoption in LIS education, 2) a framework for the effective integration of OERs into LIS curricula, 3) a curated repository of OER-based educational resources in the LIS field, and 4) a set of guidelines and best practices for LIS educators to leverage OERs in their teaching and learning activities. By addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by OERs in LIS education, this project has the potential to significantly enhance the quality, accessibility, and relevance of LIS programs. The findings and resources developed through this initiative will benefit LIS educators, students, and the broader information professional community, contributing to the advancement of the field and the empowerment of lifelong learners.
