Project Abstract

This study investigates how digital literacy training influences information-seeking behavior and research productivity among final-year Library Science students, with the aim of identifying mechanisms, outcomes, and practical implications for library education. A convergent mixed-methods design was employed to capture both quantitative shifts in information-seeking patterns and qualitative perceptions of digital competencies, confidence, and scholarly workflow. The population comprised final-year Library Science students enrolled at three accredited universities, with stratified sampling yielding 360 survey respondents and 30 in-depth interview participants to ensure representation across gender, age, prior digital literacy exposure, and academic performance. Quantitative data were collected using a validated Digital Literacy Competency Instrument (DLCI), a standardized Information-Seeking Behavior Scale (ISBS), and a Research Productivity Index (RPI) assembled from self-reported outputs, supervisor evaluations, and institutional repositories over the previous academic year. Qualitative data were generated through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions to explore perceived barriers, enablers, and contextual factors influencing the translation of digital literacy into scholarly work. The study introduces a digital literacy training program tailored for Library Science curricula, incorporating search strategies across academic databases, scholarly communication ethics, data management, bibliometrics, citation analysis, open access, and critical evaluation of online information sources. Analyses employed descriptive statistics, paired-sample t-tests, and multiple regression to determine the relationship between training exposure and changes in ISBS and RPI, controlling for prior digital literacy levels and academic performance. The qualitative data underwent thematic analysis to triangulate and elaborate the quantitative findings, ensuring credibility through member checking and intercoder reliability checks. Results indicate that participants who completed the digital literacy training demonstrated statistically significant improvements in information-seeking efficiency, reduced time-to-source evaluation, and higher-quality source selection, which collectively correlated with a measurable increase in research productivity, including manuscript submissions, conference presentations, and grant-related activities. Mediation analysis revealed that enhancements in information-seeking behavior partially mediated the relationship between digital literacy training and research productivity, with data management and bibliographic organization emerging as pivotal subskills. Qualitative findings corroborated these results, highlighting that structured search strategies, critical appraisal, and ethical use of information foster greater autonomy, confidence, and collaboration in research teams. The study also uncovered challenges such as limited access to licensed databases, variable faculty support, and time constraints within the final-year workload, which moderated the training’s effectiveness. Practical implications include recommendations for integrating modular digital literacy modules into core Library Science curricula, provisioning sustainable access to digital resources, and establishing mentorship frameworks to sustain gains in information literacy and scholarly output. Theoretical contributions relate to information-seeking theory and the diffusion of innovations in higher education, extending understanding of how targeted digital literacy interventions translate into measurable academic productivity. The study concludes with a concise framework for assessing digital literacy impact in library education programs and offers policy-oriented guidance for institutions seeking to align training with research quality and relevance in the digital age.
