Project Abstract

This study investigates how structured information literacy instruction affects undergraduate students’ research skills within university libraries, aiming to determine the effectiveness of targeted pedagogy in enhancing information literacy competencies essential for academic success. A mixed-methods design was employed, integrating quantitative assessments of research skill proficiency with qualitative insights from student experiences and librarian observations across three undergraduate programs over two academic semesters. The quantitative component utilized a pretest–posttest control group design, administering a validated Information Literacy Assessment Instrument (ILAI) to 600 participants from Introduction to Research, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences cohorts, with 300 students exposed to a standardized IL curriculum and 300 receiving conventional library instruction. Post-intervention analyses examined gains in search strategy development, source evaluation, citation accuracy, ethical use of information, and the ability to construct a coherent literature review. The qualitative strand consisted of focus group discussions with 6–8 students per program and semi-structured interviews with 12 librarians, complemented by classroom observation notes to triangulate findings and capture contextual factors influencing skill development, such as instructional delivery mode, learning environment, and access to digital resources. Effect sizes suggest that discipline-specific adaptations of IL content amplified learning outcomes, particularly in sciences where database navigation and data literacy components were embedded. Qualitative data reveal that students perceived IL instruction as instrumental in demystifying scholarly communication, improving confidence in independently locating credible sources, and recognizing gaps in their own knowledge. Librarian perspectives highlighted the importance of active learning strategies, collaborative teaching, and timely feedback cycles in sustaining skill development beyond initial instruction sessions. The study also identifies limitations, including potential Hawthorne effects, variability in instructor delivery, and constraints of transferability across institutional contexts. Implications for library practice emphasize the need for integrated IL curricula embedded within first-year core courses, longitudinal skill development across the undergraduate experience, and scalable assessment frameworks to monitor progress and inform program design. Policy recommendations advocate for standardized IL benchmarks aligned with institutional learning outcomes, professional development for librarians in evidence-based instructional methods, and enhanced collaboration with academic departments to tailor information literacy objectives to disciplinary research workflows. The research contributes empirical evidence on the effectiveness of information literacy programs in elevating undergraduate research proficiency, offering actionable guidance for libraries seeking to demonstrate impact on student learning, promote scholarly integrity, and support successful academic performance.
