Development of a Digital Literacy Program for Enhancing Library Science Education in Higher Institutions

Project Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technologies has fundamentally transformed the landscape of library science education, necessitating the integration of comprehensive digital literacy skills into curricula to prepare future librarians effectively. This study aims to develop a tailored digital literacy program designed to enhance the competency of library science students in higher institutions. Employing a mixed-methods research approach, the study combines qualitative insights from interviews and focus group discussions with quantitative data gathered through surveys administered to students and faculty across selected universities. The research begins with an extensive review of existing literature on digital literacy, instructional strategies, and library science education, identifying gaps and best practices. The study’s design involves assessing the current level of digital skills among students, evaluating the effectiveness of existing curricular components, and determining the specific digital competencies required for contemporary library practice. Based on the needs assessment, a digitized instructional framework is formulated, encompassing modules on information literacy, digital resource management, cybersecurity, data privacy, social media proficiency, digital content creation, and emerging technologies such as AI and IoT. This framework is validated through expert review and pilot testing within selected institutions. Implementation involves integrating the developed program into existing library science courses and conducting workshops and training sessions for students and faculty members. Data collection during this phase includes pre- and post-intervention assessments, observational checklists, and feedback forms to evaluate the program’s impact on participants’ digital skills, confidence, and application abilities.
