Project Abstract
Physical education is a crucial component of the educational curriculum, and the qualification of teachers in this subject area plays a significant role in shaping the performance of secondary school students in external examinations. This research project sought to investigate the effects of the qualification of physical education teachers on the academic performance of students, with a focus on selected schools in Nsukka Local Government Area. The study employed a case study research design, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative research methods to gather data from a sample of secondary schools in the area. Data collection techniques included teacher interviews, student performance analysis, and examination of official records. The research focused on the qualifications of physical education teachers, their teaching methods, and the correlation between these factors and student performance in external examinations. Findings from the study indicated a strong relationship between the qualifications of physical education teachers and the academic performance of students in external examinations. Teachers with higher qualifications and specialized training in physical education demonstrated a positive impact on student outcomes, including higher examination scores and overall academic achievement. These teachers were found to employ more effective teaching strategies, engage students in active learning, and create a conducive learning environment that enhanced student performance. Conversely, schools with teachers who lacked formal qualifications or training in physical education showed lower student performance levels in external examinations. These teachers struggled to effectively deliver the curriculum, engage students in physical activities, and promote a holistic approach to education through physical education. As a result, students in these schools faced challenges in meeting academic standards and achieving success in external examinations. Overall, the research highlighted the critical importance of the qualification of physical education teachers in influencing the academic performance of secondary school students. The findings underscored the need for schools to prioritize hiring qualified teachers in the field of physical education, provide ongoing professional development opportunities, and support teachers in implementing innovative teaching practices to enhance student learning outcomes. By investing in qualified teachers and promoting excellence in physical education instruction, schools can empower students to succeed academically and holistically thrive in their educational journey.
