Project Abstract

This study investigates the effects of a structured high-intensity interval training (HIIT) program on cardiovascular fitness, body composition, and mental well-being among college students over a 12-week period. A randomized controlled trial design was employed with 120 healthy undergraduate volunteers aged 18–25 years, randomly assigned to either an intervention group engaging in thrice-weekly HIIT sessions or a control group maintaining their usual physical activity. The HIIT protocol consisted of 4–6 cycles per session, each cycle including 30 seconds of near-maximal effort followed by 60–90 seconds of active recovery, progressing in duration and intensity over the study period to reach a sustainable workload tailored to individual fitness levels. Primary outcomes included VO2max as a measure of cardiovascular fitness, body fat percentage, lean mass, and waist-to-hip ratio assessed via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Secondary outcomes encompassed resting heart rate, blood pressure, and a panel of anthropometric indices. Additionally, validated psychometric instruments were employed to evaluate mental well-being, including perceived stress, mood disturbance, anxiety, and overall quality of life, alongside assessments of sleep quality and daytime functioning. Baseline characteristics were comparable between groups. Adherence to the HIIT program averaged 86% with negligible adverse events, supporting the feasibility and safety of HIIT in a university setting. Post-intervention analyses revealed that the HIIT group achieved a statistically significant improvement in VO2max (mean increase of 6.5 mL·kg?¹·min?¹, p < 0.001) compared with controls, indicative of enhanced aerobic capacity. Body composition changes favored HIIT with a modest reduction in body fat percentage (mean ?2.1%, p = 0.002) and a small but significant increase in lean mass (mean +1.2 kg, p = 0.01). Central adiposity, measured by waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio, showed favorable shifts in the HIIT group (p < 0.05). Mental well-being outcomes demonstrated meaningful improvements in perceived stress reduction (p = 0.003), decreased mood disturbance (p = 0.007), and enhanced sleep quality (p = 0.01) among HIIT participants, with moderate effect sizes. Anxiety scores declined modestly but did not reach conventional levels of statistical significance in all analyses. Quality of life indices improved substantially, driven by domains related to physical health, energy, and social functioning. Mediation analyses suggested that improvements in VO2max and sleep quality partially mediated the relationship between HIIT participation and enhanced well-being, while reductions in body fat contributed to the observed mood benefits through improved self-esteem and physical self-perception. Subgroup analyses indicated greater benefits for participants with lower baseline fitness and higher baseline stress levels, though interaction effects were limited by sample size. The findings support HIIT as an effective, time-efficient modality to augment cardiovascular fitness and favorably modify body composition in college students, with concurrent positive effects on mental well-being and sleep. The study informs university health promotion strategies, suggesting scalable HIIT implementations within campus fitness facilities and organized intramural programs. Limitations include the single-site design, short follow-up period, and reliance on self-reported psychosocial measures. Further research is recommended to examine long-term maintenance, differential effects across sexes, and comparative efficacy against moderate-intensity continuous training in diverse student populations.
