Project Abstract

The rapid digitization of procurement processes has transformed how multinational manufacturing firms manage supplier relationships and optimize costs, enabling real-time data exchange, enhanced transparency, and more strategic sourcing decisions. This study investigates the impact of digital procurement platforms (DPPs) on supplier relationship management (SRM) and cost optimization across diverse manufacturing sectors with global supply chains. A mixed-methods approach combines quantitative analysis of procurement performance metrics from 12 multinational manufacturers over five years with qualitative insights from 36 interviews of procurement leaders, category managers, and key suppliers. The research identifies how DPPs influence SRM dimensionsโ€”trust, collaboration, information sharing, risk management, and performance monitoringโ€”and correlates these changes with measurable financial outcomes such as total cost of ownership (TCO), working capital efficiency, and supplier lead times. The conceptual framework links digital platform capabilities (e-procurement, e-sourcing, supplier portals, e-invoicing, predictive analytics, and AI-driven supplier segmentation) to SRM processes (supplier onboarding, performance evaluation, grievance resolution, and joint innovation) and to cost optimization levers (pricing transparency, demand forecasting accuracy, inventory optimization, and category-level negotiation power). Findings indicate that DPPs enhance SRM by increasing accessibility to supplier performance data, enabling collaborative planning, and standardizing communication protocols across geographies. Enhanced transparency reduces information asymmetry, accelerates issue resolution, and promotes compliance with contractual terms, which in turn strengthens supplier trust and long-term partnerships. On the cost front, digital platforms improve quotation accuracy, enable dynamic tiered pricing, optimize order quantities through data-driven demand signals, and facilitate early payment discounts and supplier financing options, cumulatively reducing TCO and improving cash conversion cycles. However, the study also reveals critical moderating factors platform interoperability with legacy systems, data governance and data quality issues, supplier capability to adopt digital tools, cybersecurity concerns, and organizational change management challenges. Sector-specific variations show that high-volume, commodity-heavy categories experience the most pronounced cost savings from catalog enablers and automated requisition workflows, while strategic partnerships and supplier development programs gain the most leverage from analytics-driven supplier segmentation and collaborative dashboards. The paper discusses governance mechanisms, risk mitigation strategies, and best practices for selecting, implementing, and integrating DPPs in multinational environments. Policy implications emphasize standardized data models, cross-border compliance, and ethical considerations in data sharing with suppliers. The study concludes with a roadmap for organizations aiming to maximize SRM improvements and cost efficiencies through digital procurement, detailing phased implementation, success metrics, and a framework for continuous monitoring and refinement.

Project Overview

What This Project Is About

A plain-language overview of how digital tools used to buy goods and services influence the way manufacturers work with their suppliers, and how these tools can help cut costs. The project looks at how online procurement platforms, data sharing, and automation change relationships with vendors and reduce total purchasing expenses.

The Problem It Addresses

Many large manufacturers still rely on fragmented, manual purchasing processes that lead to delays, higher costs, and weak supplier collaboration. This project investigates whether digital procurement platforms can streamline purchases, improve communication with suppliers, and lower costs without sacrificing quality or reliability.

Objectives of the Project

  1. Explain what digital procurement platforms are and how they work in multinational manufacturing.
  2. Identify how these platforms affect supplier relationship management.
  3. Assess potential cost-saving opportunities from digital tools and process changes.
  4. Provide practical guidelines for implementing digital procurement in a large firm.
  5. Highlight risks and how to mitigate them, including data security and change management.

What You Will Do Step by Step

  1. Review relevant literature on digital procurement and supplier management.
  2. Map the procurement process in a case study multinational manufacturer.
  3. Collect data through interviews, procurement records, and platform analytics.
  4. Analyze how the platform changes supplier communications and spend patterns.
  5. Identify cost-saving areas and quantify potential impact.
  6. Develop a practical implementation plan and checklist.

Expected Outcome

The project should deliver a clear understanding of how digital procurement platforms affect supplier relationships and cost efficiency, plus actionable steps for adoption, potential savings estimates, and considerations for successful implementation in a multinational setting.
