Project Abstract
This research project delves into the concept of Machiavellism within the political dispensation of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, focusing on a philosophical evaluation of his leadership style and decision-making processes. Machiavellism, derived from the political theories of Niccolò Machiavelli, is synonymous with cunning, deceit, and the use of any means necessary to maintain power and control. In the context of Obasanjo's tenure as President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007, this study seeks to analyze the extent to which Machiavellian principles were employed and their impact on governance, policies, and socio-political dynamics. Through an interdisciplinary approach that combines political science, philosophy, and historical analysis, this research aims to explore the ethical implications of Machiavellism in Obasanjo's administration. By examining key events, policies, and decisions during his presidency, the study will assess whether his leadership can be characterized as Machiavellian and the consequences of such a leadership style on the Nigerian society and political landscape. Additionally, the research will investigate the motivations behind Obasanjo's actions and whether they align with Machiavellian principles of pragmatism and self-interest. Furthermore, this project will scrutinize the public perception of Obasanjo's leadership and the role of Machiavellism in shaping his legacy as a political figure. By analyzing a range of primary sources, including speeches, interviews, and policy documents, as well as secondary literature on Machiavellianism and political theory, the study seeks to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the philosophical underpinnings of Obasanjo's political strategies. Ultimately, this research project aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the complexities of political leadership and the ethical dilemmas inherent in the exercise of power. By critically assessing the application of Machiavellian principles in Obasanjo's political dispensation, the study will shed light on the challenges faced by leaders in navigating the competing demands of governance, morality, and public expectations. Through a nuanced philosophical analysis, this research seeks to offer insights into the enduring relevance of Machiavelli's political philosophy in contemporary political contexts and its implications for democratic governance.
