Information needs of petty traders

Project Abstract

Petty traders play a significant role in the economy of many countries, particularly in developing nations. Despite their importance, there is a lack of research focused on understanding the information needs of petty traders. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the information needs of petty traders and exploring how these needs can be effectively met. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. In the qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews will be conducted with petty traders to gain insights into their information needs, sources of information, and challenges they face in accessing relevant information. The quantitative phase will involve surveying a larger sample of petty traders to gather data on the prevalence of different information needs and the effectiveness of various information sources. The findings from this study are expected to provide valuable insights into the specific information needs of petty traders, which can vary depending on factors such as the type of goods they sell, their level of education, and their access to technology. By understanding these needs, policymakers, business support organizations, and other stakeholders can develop targeted interventions to provide petty traders with the information they need to improve their businesses. Furthermore, this research will contribute to the existing literature on information needs in the context of small businesses and entrepreneurship. While previous studies have examined the information needs of larger businesses, there is a lack of research focused specifically on petty traders, who often operate in informal markets with unique challenges and opportunities. By focusing on this understudied group, this research will fill an important gap in the literature and provide a foundation for future research in this area. Overall, this study will contribute to a better understanding of the information needs of petty traders and how these needs can be effectively addressed. By identifying the specific information needs of petty traders and the challenges they face in accessing information, this research will inform the development of targeted interventions to support petty traders and enhance their economic opportunities.
