Project Abstract

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) in Nigeria embarked on a series of strikes between 2011 and 2013 to demand better working conditions, improved infrastructure, and enhanced welfare for its members. This index survey project aimed to assess the impact of the ASUP strikes during this period on polytechnic education in Nigeria. The study utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis of strike duration, frequency, and reasons with qualitative interviews with key stakeholders in the education sector. The findings revealed that the ASUP strikes had significant negative consequences on academic calendars, student learning outcomes, and overall educational quality in polytechnics across Nigeria. The prolonged strikes disrupted the continuity of academic programs, leading to delays in graduation timelines and reduced course coverage. Additionally, the lack of consistent teaching during strike periods resulted in a decline in student performance and academic standards. Furthermore, the survey identified key factors contributing to the recurrent ASUP strikes, including inadequate government funding for polytechnics, poor infrastructure, and disparities in salary structures between polytechnic and university staff. The survey results highlighted the urgent need for sustainable solutions to address these systemic issues and prevent future disruptions to polytechnic education in Nigeria. In conclusion, this index survey provides valuable insights into the impacts of the 2011-2013 ASUP strikes on polytechnic education in Nigeria. The findings underscore the importance of addressing the underlying issues driving industrial actions in the education sector and implementing reforms to enhance the quality and stability of polytechnic education. The recommendations from this study can inform policymakers, education administrators, and union leaders in developing strategies to prevent future strikes and improve the overall educational experience for students and staff in Nigerian polytechnics.
