Project Abstract
This study investigates how digital librarianship practices influence user engagement and information literacy among university students in both public and academic libraries, aiming to identify effective digital strategies, barriers, and contextual factors that shape user interactions with information ecosystems. A convergent parallel mixed-methods design was employed to capture both quantitative and qualitative dimensions of engagement and literacy. Quantitative data were collected through standardized surveys administered to 1,200 students across five universities, complemented by library usage analytics (digital resource clicks, e-lending, online reference transactions) over an academic year. Qualitative data comprised semi-structured interviews with 40 students, 20 librarians, and 10 library administrators, along with focus group discussions to elicit nuanced perceptions of digital services, information-seeking behaviors, and perceived information literacy competencies. The study examines digital librarianship components including discovery systems, virtual reference services, digital repositories, information literacy instruction delivered through online modules, social tagging and user-generated content, mobile access, and personalized recommendation engines. Key outcomes assessed are changes in information literacy levels, defined as the ability to locate, evaluate, and ethically use information; depth of user engagement, measured through frequency of library portal visits, session duration, and participation in digital literacy programs; and perceived ease of access, relevance, and trust in digital library services. The qualitative findings illuminate how digital interfaces influence cognitive load, motivation, and self-efficacy in information seeking, with themes highlighting the importance of intuitive discovery tools, transparent authorship and licensing information, contextualized guidance, and inclusivity in design for diverse student populations. The study identifies both enabling factors—such as user-centered interface design, proactive outreach through mobile platforms, and prompt virtual reference responses—and barriers including digital fatigue, information overload, inconsistent metadata quality, and unequal access to high-speed connectivity. The results offer a framework for integrating digital librarianship practices into a holistic information literacy curriculum, emphasizing iterative assessment, co-created learning experiences, and scalable interventions that bridge public and academic library contexts. Policy implications address resource allocation for digital infrastructure, professional development for librarians in data-driven services, and the adoption of standards for interoperability and privacy. The study contributes to theoretical understanding of digital librarianship as a facilitator of information literacy and user engagement, and provides actionable recommendations for library administrators and educators to design, implement, and evaluate digital services that meet emerging student needs in diverse academic environments.
