Project Abstract
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become an essential tool in managing academic libraries worldwide, including those in Nigeria. This research aims to explore the application of ICT in Nigerian academic libraries and its impact on management processes. The study investigates the current state of ICT infrastructure, software applications, and digital resources used in Nigerian academic libraries. It also examines the challenges faced by these libraries in adopting and implementing ICT solutions. Through a combination of literature review and empirical research methods, this study provides insights into the benefits and challenges of integrating ICT in Nigerian academic libraries. The findings reveal that ICT has significantly improved various library functions, such as cataloging, circulation, reference services, and digital preservation. The use of integrated library systems, electronic resources, and library management software has enhanced efficiency and access to information for library users. However, the research also identifies several challenges hindering the full potential of ICT in Nigerian academic libraries. These challenges include inadequate ICT infrastructure, limited funding for technology acquisition and maintenance, insufficient ICT skills among library staff, and issues related to digital preservation and data security. Addressing these challenges is crucial for optimizing the benefits of ICT in library management and improving overall service delivery. The study recommends strategies for overcoming the barriers to ICT adoption in Nigerian academic libraries. These include investing in modern ICT infrastructure, providing training and capacity building for library staff, establishing partnerships with ICT vendors and service providers, and developing comprehensive ICT policies and guidelines. By addressing these recommendations, Nigerian academic libraries can enhance their capabilities in information management, knowledge dissemination, and user services. In conclusion, this research highlights the importance of ICT in the management of Nigerian academic libraries and emphasizes the need for continuous innovation and improvement in leveraging technology for library services. By embracing ICT solutions and addressing the challenges associated with their implementation, Nigerian academic libraries can enhance their relevance, efficiency, and impact on the academic community.
