•

Home Economics is one of the compulsory prevocational subjects taught at the Junior Secondary Education level in Nigeria educational system. According to Anyakoha (2007), Home Economics is a skill oriented field of study that is expected to equip learners with survival skills that make for self-reliance, employment and paid employment. Occupational skills are best understood as competency on resourceful skills capable of steering an individual to be self-reliant, independent and productive in meeting lives challenges. Creese, A. (1976) said occupational skills are life survival skills which an individual needs to function effectively and face the challenges of life. Occupational skills in Home Economics include food and nutrition skills, home management skills and clothing and textile skills. By teaching occupational skills Home Economics Education Program enables an individual to learn, explore and prepare for a job or trade. Thus Home Economics could play a significant role in achieving the goals of the National Economic and Development strategy (NEEDS). These goals include wealth creation, employment generation, reduction of poverty, elimination of corruption and the general reorientation of values. In spite of these laudable qualities of Home Economics as a skill, there are series of challenges which impede its growth to be one of the pathways to national transformation. Some of these challenges include, Federal Government’s lukewarm attitude towards vocational and technical education programmes generally in Nigerian Universities, the perception of the society towards graduates of Home Economics as those who could not fit into any other challenging course, lack of candidates interest as they see the programme as expensive, inadequate manpower to teach Home Economics at the Junior and senior secondary school levels; as well as frustration on the part of teachers because of lack of modern equipment for proper practicals to mention but a few.

Project Abstract

Home economics education plays a crucial role in shaping individuals' knowledge and skills related to household management, nutrition, and family well-being. Despite its importance, the field of home economics education faces various challenges that impact its effectiveness in contributing to national transformation. This research project aims to explore and analyze these challenges to provide insights for improving home economics education and its role in national development. One of the primary challenges facing home economics education is the perception of the field as outdated or less important compared to other academic disciplines. This perception often leads to a lack of funding and support for home economics programs, resulting in limited resources and opportunities for students and educators in this field. Addressing this challenge requires raising awareness about the significance of home economics education in equipping individuals with essential life skills and promoting overall well-being. Another significant challenge is the evolving nature of household dynamics and societal trends, which require continuous updates and adaptations to home economics curricula. As families and lifestyles change, home economics education must remain relevant by incorporating current issues such as sustainable living practices, technology integration in homes, and diverse family structures. Educators in this field need professional development opportunities to enhance their knowledge and teaching strategies to address these evolving needs effectively. Furthermore, the lack of standardized assessment methods and evaluation criteria poses a challenge in measuring the impact and outcomes of home economics education. Without clear benchmarks for success, it becomes difficult to assess the effectiveness of programs and make informed decisions for improvement. Developing comprehensive assessment tools and frameworks tailored to the unique goals of home economics education is essential for demonstrating its value and fostering continuous growth and development. In conclusion, understanding and addressing the challenges facing home economics education are crucial for maximizing its potential contribution to national transformation. By overcoming perceptions of the field, adapting to changing societal needs, and implementing robust assessment practices, home economics education can empower individuals with practical skills and knowledge essential for personal and societal well-being. This research project aims to provide valuable insights and recommendations to enhance the quality and impact of home economics education in driving positive change at the national level.
