Project Abstract

Home economics education plays a crucial role in equipping students with essential life skills and knowledge for their personal and professional development. This research project aimed to explore the challenges faced by teachers in effectively teaching and learning home economics in schools and colleges in Imo State, Nigeria. The study utilized a qualitative research approach, conducting interviews with 20 home economics teachers from various educational institutions in the state. The findings revealed several key challenges perceived by teachers in the field of home economics education. These challenges included inadequate funding for resources and materials, limited practical facilities and equipment, large class sizes, lack of professional development opportunities, and insufficient support from school administrators. Teachers also expressed concerns about the outdated curriculum that did not align with current industry standards and advancements in home economics education. Furthermore, the study highlighted the importance of addressing these challenges to enhance the quality of home economics education in Imo State. Recommendations were made to improve the teaching and learning of home economics, including increasing funding for resources and equipment, providing professional development opportunities for teachers, updating the curriculum to reflect current trends, and fostering collaboration between teachers, schools, and relevant stakeholders. Overall, this research contributes to the existing literature on home economics education by shedding light on the challenges faced by teachers in Imo State. By understanding these challenges and implementing the recommended strategies, policymakers, educators, and stakeholders can work together to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in home economics, ultimately benefiting students' educational experiences and future success.
