Access to reliable and affordable renewable energy is a critical driver of household welfare and rural development. This study investigates how renewable energy access influences household expenditure patterns and livelihoods in rural communities, with emphasis on electricity reliability, energy affordability, productivity, and resilience to climate variability. A mixed-methods design was employed, combining quantitative household surveys (n=600) across three rural districts with qualitative interviews (n=40) of households, energy suppliers, local government officials, and micro-enterprises. The quantitative analysis uses a difference-in-differences approach to compare energy-poor households before and after renewable energy interventions against a matched control group without such interventions, controlling for household income, household size, education, and asset ownership. On the expenditure side, households shift spending toward productive goods and services, such as farm inputs, small-scale entrepreneurship, and healthcare, while overall expenditure volatility decreases due to energy price stability. The study also identifies constraints, including upfront capital requirements, limited technical literacy, and inadequate regulatory support, which shape adoption rates and impact magnitudes. Gender-disaggregated analysis reveals that women experience disproportionate benefits in time savings and decision-making autonomy, yet face continued barriers in access to credit and information networks. Environmental and health co-benefits emerge through reduced indoor air pollution and lower exposure to fuel smoke, contributing to improved well-being indicators. Policy implications underscore the importance of integrated rural energy strategies that combine affordable financing, consumer education, and robust maintenance services with supportive policy frameworks that incentivize renewable deployments in off-grid communities. The findings advocate for targeted subsidies, microfinance schemes, community-based energy management models, and capacity-building programs to maximize livelihood gains and equitable access. Limitations include potential selection bias in participating communities and the challenge of isolating renewable energy effects from concurrent development interventions. Future research should explore long-term livelihood trajectories, scalability across diverse rural contexts, and the role of digital platforms in enhancing energy access and financial inclusion. Overall, the study demonstrates that renewable energy access is a viable pathway to reduce household energy poverty, stimulate productive economic activity, and enhance resilience in rural livelihoods.
