Project Abstract
Landfills are significant sources of methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming and climate change. This research project focuses on studying the effect of methane emissions from landfills in Nigeria. Nigeria, as a developing country, faces challenges in waste management practices, leading to the release of substantial amounts of methane into the atmosphere from landfills. The study aims to quantify the methane emissions from landfills in Nigeria, assess the impact of these emissions on the environment and climate, and propose mitigation strategies to reduce methane release from landfills. The research will involve field measurements of methane concentrations at selected landfill sites across different regions of Nigeria. Data collected will be analyzed to estimate the total methane emissions from landfills in the country and evaluate the contribution of these emissions to the nation's greenhouse gas inventory. The environmental impact of methane emissions, including their role in climate change and air quality degradation, will be assessed through modeling and simulation techniques. Furthermore, the study will explore various methane mitigation options suitable for Nigerian landfill conditions, such as landfill gas capture and utilization, improved waste management practices, and technologies for methane oxidation. Cost-benefit analysis of different mitigation measures will be conducted to determine the most effective and economical strategies for reducing methane emissions from landfills in Nigeria. The findings of this research are expected to provide valuable insights into the extent of methane emissions from landfills in Nigeria, their environmental consequences, and potential solutions to mitigate these emissions. By understanding the sources and impacts of methane emissions from landfills, policymakers, waste management authorities, and other stakeholders can develop targeted strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and mitigate climate change effects in Nigeria. Overall, this research project addresses an important environmental issue in Nigeria by focusing on methane emissions from landfills and aims to contribute to sustainable waste management practices and climate change mitigation efforts in the country.
