Project Abstract

This research project examines the various environmental impacts associated with the extraction, processing, transportation, construction, use, and disposal of common housing and building materials. Materials to be analyzed include wood, concrete, steel, aluminum, plastics, glass, and insulation materials. The project will evaluate the carbon footprint, water and land usage, air and water pollution, waste generation, and other environmental consequences at each stage of the materials' lifecycles. Comparisons will be made between material types to identify those with the lowest overall environmental impacts. The goal is to raise awareness of sustainable material choices and their role in green building and reducing environmental impacts of the construction industry.
