Project Abstract
Outdoor air pollution is a significant environmental health issue in Nigeria, with major implications for public health. The country is experiencing rapid urbanization and industrialization, leading to increased emissions from various sources such as vehicular traffic, industrial activities, open waste burning, and biomass combustion. These emissions contain a complex mixture of pollutants including particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can have detrimental effects on human health. Studies have shown that exposure to outdoor air pollution in Nigeria is associated with various adverse health outcomes, including respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer, as well as cardiovascular diseases, low birth weight, and premature mortality. Vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions are particularly at risk. The health impact of air pollution is further exacerbated by factors such as poor urban planning, inadequate regulatory enforcement, and limited access to healthcare services. Despite the well-documented health effects of outdoor air pollution in Nigeria, there are several knowledge gaps that need to be addressed to better understand the extent of the problem and develop effective public health interventions. Future research should focus on assessing the spatial and temporal trends of air pollution levels across different regions in Nigeria, identifying the sources and composition of pollutants, and evaluating the health risks associated with specific pollutants and exposure scenarios. Furthermore, there is a need to strengthen air quality monitoring networks, enhance data sharing and collaboration among relevant stakeholders, and implement evidence-based policies and interventions to reduce air pollution levels and protect public health. Community engagement and awareness-raising activities are also crucial in promoting behavioral changes and advocating for sustainable development practices that prioritize environmental health. In conclusion, addressing the health impact of outdoor air pollution in Nigeria requires a multi-sectoral approach involving government agencies, academia, healthcare providers, industry, and civil society. By prioritizing research efforts and implementing targeted interventions, Nigeria can mitigate the adverse effects of air pollution and improve the overall well-being of its population.
