Project Abstract
Industrial activities are a significant source of air pollution, with refineries being one of the major contributors to poor air quality. This study focuses on air pollution control within an industrial environment, specifically the Port Harcourt Refinery in Rivers State, Nigeria. The aim of the research is to investigate the current air pollution control measures in place at the refinery and to propose strategies for improvement. The study employs a case study approach, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative research methods to gather data. Air quality monitoring will be conducted at various locations within the refinery to assess the levels of pollutants emitted. Additionally, interviews and surveys will be conducted with key personnel responsible for environmental management at the refinery to understand the existing practices and challenges in air pollution control. The findings of the research will provide insights into the types and levels of air pollutants emitted by the refinery, as well as the effectiveness of current control measures. It is expected that the study will identify areas where improvements can be made to enhance air quality within the industrial environment. Recommendations will be made for the implementation of advanced air pollution control technologies and practices to mitigate the impact of refinery operations on the surrounding air quality. The implications of this research are significant for environmental management in industrial settings, particularly in regions like Port Harcourt where refineries play a crucial role in the economy. By improving air pollution control measures at the refinery, not only can the health and well-being of workers be safeguarded, but also the surrounding communities can benefit from reduced exposure to harmful pollutants. Overall, this study contributes to the body of knowledge on air pollution control in industrial environments, with a specific focus on the Port Harcourt Refinery in Rivers State. The research findings will be valuable for policymakers, environmental regulators, and industry stakeholders seeking to enhance air quality and mitigate the impact of industrial activities on the environment.
