Project Abstract

This study investigates how digital literacy influences entrepreneurial intent among final-year business education students, aiming to identify key digital competencies that predict proactive entrepreneurial attitudes and determine how demographic and educational factors moderate this relationship. Adopting a mixed-methods design, the research combines a cross-sectional survey of 350 final-year business education students from multiple universities with in-depth interviews of 20 purposively selected participants to enrich understanding of contextual nuances. Digital literacy was conceptualized across four dimensions technical skills (proficiency with productivity tools, programming basics, and digital platforms), information literacy (ability to locate, evaluate, and apply information), cognitive fluency (digital problem-solving, adaptability, and learning agility), and digital mindset (entrepreneurial orientation in digital contexts, risk-taking, and innovation willingness). Entrepreneurial intent was operationalized through a validated scale capturing readiness to pursue startup ventures, perceived feasibility, perceived desirability, and anticipated barriers. Quantitative analysis employed structural equation modeling to test a hypothesized model where digital literacy positively influences entrepreneurial intent directly and indirectly through mediators such as perceived self-efficacy, opportunity recognition, and perceived support for digital entrepreneurship. Moderation analyses explored the roles of gender, prior entrepreneurship exposure, and curriculum emphasis on entrepreneurship education. The qualitative strand used thematic analysis to extract rich narratives on how students leverage digital tools to conceive business ideas, validate market needs, and develop business plans in a digital economy. Integration of methods followed a convergent parallel design to triangulate findings and provide comprehensive explanations. Results indicate that higher levels of overall digital literacy significantly predict stronger entrepreneurial intent (? = 0.42, p < 0.001), with information literacy and digital mindset showing the strongest direct effects. Cognitive fluency and technical skills contribute indirectly by enhancing self-efficacy and opportunity recognition, which in turn elevate intent. Perceived institutional support and access to entrepreneurial digital resources moderated the relationship, strengthening the impact among students with prior exposure to entrepreneurship education and proactive use of digital platforms. Gender differences emerged, with female students showing comparable levels of intent when digital literacy was high, suggesting digital competencies may bridge traditional gender gaps in entrepreneurial aspirations. Qualitative insights reveal that students translate digital literacy into concrete business ideas by leveraging online marketplaces, social media analytics, and low-code tools to prototype offerings rapidly, validate customer interest, and reduce initial capital requirements. The study contributes to theory by integrating digital literacy dimensions into models of entrepreneurial intention within business education, and to practice by highlighting curricular and infrastructural investments (e.g., integrated digital entrepreneurship modules, access to digital labs, and mentorship programs) that can cultivate entrepreneurial intent. Policy implications underscore the importance of embedding digital literacy across business education curricula to prepare graduates for digitally enabled entrepreneurship in dynamic markets. Limitations include cross-sectional design and potential self-report biases, with recommendations for longitudinal studies and multi-institutional replications to corroborate causal inferences.

Project Overview

What This Project Is About
A plain-language overview of how digital literacy may influence studentsโ€™ plans to start businesses or pursue entrepreneurship after finishing their degree, and how confident they feel using digital tools to turn ideas into action.

The Problem It Addresses
Many final-year business education students feel unsure about starting ventures because they lack confidence in using online tools, digital marketing, and digital collaboration. This study explores whether stronger digital literacy helps students form clearer entrepreneurial intentions and plan concrete steps for starting a venture.

Objectives of the Project

  1. Explain what digital literacy means in the context of business education.
  2. Assess studentsโ€™ current digital skills relevant to entrepreneurship.
  3. Examine the relationship between digital literacy levels and entrepreneurial intent.
  4. Identify gaps and suggest practical ways to build digital skills in the curriculum.

What You Will Do Step by Step

  1. Review relevant literature on digital literacy and entrepreneurship.
  2. Design a simple survey to measure digital skills and entrepreneurial intent.
  3. Collect data from final-year business education students.
  4. Analyze data to see if higher digital literacy relates to stronger entrepreneurial intentions.
  5. Interpret results and discuss implications for teaching and policy.

Expected Outcome

A clear understanding of how digital literacy relates to entrepreneurial intent, plus actionable recommendations for strengthening digital skills within business education to foster student entrepreneurship.
