Project Abstract
This research study aims to investigate the effect of government policy on commercial bank lending ability in Nigeria. Commercial banks play a crucial role in the economy by providing financial services, including lending to individuals and businesses. Government policies, such as monetary and fiscal measures, can significantly impact the lending ability of banks. In Nigeria, a developing country with a growing financial sector, understanding how government policies influence commercial bank lending is essential for economic stability and growth. The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of bank lending data with qualitative interviews with key stakeholders in the banking and regulatory sectors. By analyzing data on bank lending trends before and after the implementation of various government policies, the research aims to identify the specific mechanisms through which policy changes affect commercial bank lending in Nigeria. Government policies can influence commercial bank lending ability through various channels. For example, changes in the central bank's monetary policy, such as interest rate adjustments, reserve requirements, and open market operations, can directly impact banks' cost of funds and their willingness to lend. Fiscal policies, such as tax incentives or regulatory changes, can also influence banks' lending decisions by affecting the overall business environment and credit demand. The research will also explore the role of regulatory frameworks and institutional arrangements in shaping the relationship between government policy and commercial bank lending in Nigeria. By conducting interviews with regulators, commercial bank executives, and industry experts, the study aims to gain insights into the perceptions and experiences of key stakeholders regarding the impact of government policies on bank lending practices. The findings of this research are expected to provide valuable insights for policymakers, regulators, and commercial banks in Nigeria. By understanding how government policies influence commercial bank lending ability, stakeholders can make informed decisions to promote financial stability and support economic growth. Additionally, the study may contribute to the existing literature on the relationship between government policy and banking sector dynamics in developing countries. In conclusion, this research study will shed light on the complex interactions between government policy and commercial bank lending ability in Nigeria. By examining the mechanisms through which policy changes affect bank lending practices, the study aims to inform policy discussions and enhance the effectiveness of financial regulation and supervision in the country.
