Project Abstract
This research investigates the relationship between bank distress and economic growth in Nigeria. The study utilizes a panel data analysis covering the period from 2000 to 2020. The main objective is to examine how bank distress impacts the overall economic performance of Nigeria. The research employs various economic indicators such as GDP growth rate, inflation rate, interest rates, exchange rates, and bank distress variables to analyze the dynamic relationship between financial sector instability and economic growth. The findings suggest that bank distress has a significant negative impact on economic growth in Nigeria. The results show that periods of bank distress are associated with lower GDP growth rates, higher inflation, and increased interest rates. Furthermore, the study reveals that exchange rate fluctuations are also influenced by the banking sector's health, pointing to the interconnectedness of financial stability and exchange rate stability in Nigeria. Moreover, the research explores the transmission channels through which bank distress affects economic growth. It highlights the role of credit availability, investment levels, and consumer spending as key channels through which financial sector instability can hinder economic growth. The study underscores the importance of a well-functioning banking sector in promoting economic development and stability in Nigeria. Policy implications drawn from the study emphasize the need for enhanced regulatory frameworks and monitoring mechanisms to prevent and mitigate instances of bank distress. Strengthening the resilience of the banking sector through improved risk management practices and capital adequacy requirements is crucial for safeguarding economic growth in Nigeria. Additionally, the findings underscore the importance of promoting financial inclusion and reducing income inequality to foster sustainable economic development. Overall, this research contributes to the existing literature on the relationship between bank distress and economic growth in Nigeria. The findings underscore the detrimental effects of financial sector instability on the overall economic performance of the country. By shedding light on the dynamics of this relationship, the study provides valuable insights for policymakers, regulators, and stakeholders seeking to promote a stable and prosperous economic environment in Nigeria.
