Project Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of modern office automation on the productivity of secretaries in government parastatals in Enugu State. The research was prompted by the growing trend of office automation technologies being implemented in various organizations and the need to understand how these advancements impact the performance of secretaries, who play a crucial role in enhancing organizational efficiency. A mixed-methods research approach was employed, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. The study involved conducting surveys with secretaries working in government parastatals in Enugu State to gather quantitative data on their perceptions of modern office automation tools and how these tools influenced their productivity. In addition, in-depth interviews were conducted with selected secretaries to provide qualitative insights into the specific ways in which office automation technologies affected their daily tasks and overall job performance. The findings of the study revealed that modern office automation tools, such as computer software, email systems, and electronic document management systems, have a significant positive impact on the productivity of secretaries in government parastatals. Secretaries reported that these technologies enabled them to perform their tasks more efficiently, communicate effectively with colleagues and external stakeholders, and organize and retrieve information more quickly. The study also identified that training and support in the use of office automation tools were crucial factors that influenced the extent to which secretaries could leverage these technologies to enhance their productivity. However, the research also highlighted some challenges associated with the adoption of modern office automation in government parastatals, including resistance to change from some secretaries, inadequate training opportunities, and concerns about job security due to the automation of certain tasks. These challenges underscored the importance of providing comprehensive training programs and ongoing support to facilitate the successful integration of office automation technologies in the workplace. Overall, this study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on the impact of modern office automation on secretarial productivity in government parastatals. The findings suggest that when properly implemented and supported, office automation technologies can significantly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of secretarial functions, ultimately leading to improved organizational performance.
