Digital distraction, driven by smartphone omnipresence and multi-tasking demands, poses a pervasive threat to executive functions such as inhibitory control, working memory, cognitive flexibility, and sustained attention among undergraduate students, with downstream implications for academic performance. This longitudinal study tracked a cohort of 612 first- to third-year university students over two academic years to examine temporal relationships between digital distraction, executive function trajectories, and academic outcomes. Digital distraction was quantified using objective smartphone usage data (screen time, notification frequency, and app switching) and experience sampling methods to capture real-time distraction episodes during study periods. Executive function was assessed through a battery of standardized tasks measuring inhibitory control (Stroop task, Go/No-Go paradigm), working memory (n-back task, complex span tasks), and cognitive flexibility (task-switching paradigms). Academic performance was operationalized via GPA, course-specific grades, and self-reported study efficacy. Covariates included baseline cognitive ability, mood (assessed via validated scales for anxiety and depression), sleep quality, fatigue, prior academic achievement, socioeconomic status, and study environment. Initial cross-sectional analyses revealed that higher reported and objectively measured digital distraction was associated with poorer executive function performance and lower academic indicators. Longitudinal modeling using cross-lagged panel analyses indicated that digitally induced attentional disruptions at the semester level predicted subsequent declines in inhibitory control and working memory, which in turn mediated reductions in GPA and course grades over time. Conversely, periods of improved executive function functioned as a protective factor, buffering the adverse impact of distraction on academic outcomes. Mediation analyses demonstrated that changes in executive function partially mediated the effect of digital distraction on academic performance, with stronger mediation observed for working memory deficits than for inhibitory control alone. Moderation analyses identified differential susceptibility based on sleep quality and baseline self-regulated learning strategies, with students reporting poorer sleep and weaker study strategies experiencing amplified negative effects of distraction on executive function and grades. The study provides evidence for a bidirectional dynamic in which digital distraction undermines core cognitive processes that are essential for effective learning, thereby compromising academic performance, while successful academic engagement and cognitive resilience can mitigate some of these detrimental effects. The longitudinal design strengthens causal inferences about the temporal ordering of distraction, executive function decline, and academic impairment. Practical implications include the development of targeted interventions that promote mindful technology use, structured study routines, and sleep hygiene, as well as campus-wide policies encouraging distraction-reduction practices during study and examination periods. The findings also highlight the potential utility of real-time monitoring tools to identify high-risk periods and deliver just-in-time support to students, aiming to preserve executive functioning and optimize academic outcomes in an increasingly distractible educational environment.
