Project Abstract
Military rule has been a recurring phenomenon in Nigeria's political history, with several coups and periods of military dictatorship shaping the country's transition to democracy. This research project aims to analyze the impact of military rule on political transitions in Nigeria, focusing on key historical events and their implications for the country's governance structure. The study will examine the role of the military in Nigerian politics, tracing the origins of military intervention in governance and its effects on the country's political landscape. By analyzing the patterns of military coups and transitions, the research will explore how military rule has influenced the development of democratic institutions in Nigeria. Furthermore, the project will investigate the strategies employed by military regimes to legitimize their rule and maintain power, including the suppression of opposition groups and the manipulation of electoral processes. By examining case studies of military regimes in Nigeria, such as the rule of General Sani Abacha and General Ibrahim Babangida, the research will provide insights into the tactics used by military leaders to consolidate their authority. Moreover, the study will assess the impact of military rule on civil-military relations in Nigeria, examining the legacy of military intervention in governance and its implications for democratic consolidation. By analyzing the role of the military in post-transition periods, the research will evaluate the challenges and opportunities for civilian governments to assert their authority and build democratic institutions. In conclusion, this research project will contribute to the existing literature on military rule and political transition in Nigeria by providing a comprehensive analysis of the dynamics between military intervention and democratic governance. By exploring the historical context and contemporary implications of military rule, the study aims to shed light on the complex relationship between the military and civilian authorities in Nigeria's political landscape. Overall, this research project seeks to deepen our understanding of the impact of military rule on political transitions in Nigeria and the challenges and opportunities it presents for democratic governance in the country. By examining historical events and contemporary developments, the study will offer valuable insights into the dynamics of military-civilian relations and their implications for Nigeria's democratic future.
