Project Abstract
Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a widespread and debilitating condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide, posing significant challenges to healthcare systems and individuals' quality of life. The impact of CLBP extends beyond physical limitations, as it can lead to psychological distress, reduced productivity, and increased healthcare costs. Traditional approaches to CLBP management often focus on pain reduction, but there is a growing recognition that a more comprehensive, integrated approach is necessary to address the multifaceted nature of this condition and improve functional outcomes. This project aims to develop and evaluate an integrated rehabilitation program that combines evidence-based interventions to enhance functional outcomes in individuals with CLBP. The program will integrate physical therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and self-management strategies, addressing the physical, psychological, and behavioral aspects of CLBP. By integrating these complementary approaches, the project seeks to provide a more holistic and effective treatment model that can lead to improved physical function, reduced disability, and enhanced overall well-being for CLBP patients. The project will be conducted in a multi-site, randomized controlled trial (RCT) involving two groups the integrated rehabilitation program and a standard care control group. Participants will be recruited from various healthcare settings, including outpatient clinics and community-based rehabilitation centers. The integrated rehabilitation program will be delivered over a 12-week period, with participants receiving weekly sessions that combine physical therapy exercises, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and self-management education. The primary outcome measure will be changes in functional disability, as assessed by the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Secondary outcomes will include pain intensity, quality of life, psychological well-being, and adherence to the rehabilitation program. Participants will be evaluated at baseline, post-intervention, and at 6-month and 12-month follow-up to assess the long-term sustainability of the intervention's effects. The project's significance lies in its potential to improve the management of CLBP and enhance the functional outcomes for those affected by this condition. By integrating evidence-based interventions, the project aims to address the multifaceted nature of CLBP and provide a more comprehensive and effective approach to rehabilitation. The findings from this study will contribute to the growing body of research on integrated rehabilitation approaches and inform the development of more holistic and patient-centered CLBP management strategies. Furthermore, the project's multi-site design and diverse participant population will enhance the generalizability of the findings, allowing for a better understanding of the effectiveness of the integrated rehabilitation program across different healthcare settings and patient demographics. The results of this study may also inform policy and decision-making regarding the allocation of resources and the implementation of integrated rehabilitation approaches in the management of CLBP. In conclusion, this project represents a critical step in advancing the understanding and treatment of chronic low back pain. By combining physical, psychological, and self-management strategies, the integrated rehabilitation program has the potential to significantly improve functional outcomes and quality of life for individuals with CLBP, ultimately contributing to more effective and patient-centered care.
