Project Abstract
This research project aims to evaluate the government's attitude towards the media in Nigeria during the democratic dispensation period from 1999 to 2006. The study seeks to analyze the interactions between the government and the media within the context of a transitioning democracy in Nigeria. The research will delve into the policies, actions, and rhetoric of the government towards the media during this period to assess the level of freedom, support, and cooperation extended to media organizations and practitioners. Using a mixed-methods approach, data will be collected through content analysis of government statements, speeches, and policies related to the media. Additionally, interviews will be conducted with key government officials, media practitioners, and civil society representatives to gather diverse perspectives on the government's attitude towards the media. The research will also examine case studies of specific events or incidents that highlight the dynamics of the government-media relationship during this period. Theoretical frameworks such as democratic theory, media freedom, and government-media relations will guide the analysis of the data. By applying these frameworks, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the factors shaping the government's attitude towards the media in Nigeria. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the existing literature on media-government relations in democratic contexts, particularly in the Nigerian context. The significance of this research lies in its potential to inform policy decisions, advocacy efforts, and academic discourses on media freedom and democracy in Nigeria. By critically evaluating the government's attitude towards the media, this study may reveal insights into the challenges, opportunities, and implications of media-government interactions in a transitioning democracy. Ultimately, the research seeks to promote a more open, transparent, and collaborative relationship between the government and the media for the benefit of democratic governance and public discourse in Nigeria.
