Project Abstract

This study investigates how influencer micro-communities shape brand loyalty and purchase intent within the [Industry] sector, comparing effects across Gen Z and Millennial cohorts. Grounded in social identity theory and the elaboration likelihood model, the research examines how perceived intimacy, trust, and perceived authenticity within micro-communities influence consumer attitudes, behavioral intentions, and actual purchase behavior. A mixed-methods design combines a cross-sectional survey of 1,200 respondents (600 Gen Z, 600 Millennials) with in-depth interviews of 20 active members of prominent influencer micro-communities and 10 marketing managers from leading brands in the sector. Quantitative data are analyzed using structural equation modeling to test a moderated mediation model where influencer credibility and community identification mediate the relationship between exposure to micro-community content and brand outcomes, while purchase intent is moderated by consumer susceptibility to social influence and need for uniqueness. Qualitative data are analyzed thematically to capture nuances of community norms, perceived exclusivity, platform dynamics (e.g., Instagram, TikTok, YouTube), and the role of micro-influencers vs. macro-influencers in shaping trust and advocacy. Preliminary findings indicate that micro-community engagement significantly strengthens brand loyalty through reinforced social proof, functional value, and experiential storytelling, with authentic peer recommendations elevating perceived credibility more than traditional advertising. Gen Z respondents show stronger responsiveness to peer-based validation and user-generated content within micro-communities, leading to higher purchase intention when combined with message relevance and perceived alignment with personal values. Millennials respond more to consistent brand storytelling, long-term relationship cues, and perceived product quality signals embedded in micro-community dialogues. The research identifies critical dimensions of micro-community quality, including size, activity level, participant diversity, moderation quality, and transparency about sponsorships, which jointly affect perceived authenticity and loyalty development. The study also uncovers potential risks, such as echo chambers, misinformation, and over-commercialization that may dampen trust if not carefully managed. Practical implications include guidance for brands on selecting appropriate micro-influencers, fostering genuine community engagement, and designing ethically transparent campaigns that sustain loyalty across generations. The findings contribute to theory by refining models of influencer-driven consumer behavior in digital ecosystems, highlighting the differential impact of micro-community dynamics across Gen Z and Millennials, and offering a scalable framework for measuring brand loyalty and purchase intent outcomes in influencer-led marketing strategies. Limitations include reliance on self-reported data and cross-sectional design, suggesting avenues for longitudinal and experimental research to establish causality and monitor evolving platform practices.

Project Overview

What This Project Is About

This project looks at how small, tight-knit groups of online influencers (micro-communities) affect what people feel loyal to a brand and whether they intend to buy from it. It compares Gen Z and Millennials to see whether these groups influence each generation differently.

The Problem It Addresses

Despite many brands using influencers, there is limited clear evidence on how micro-communities shape trust and buying intentions across different age groups. Understanding this can help marketers design more effective, affordable campaigns that resonate with young adults and older young adults alike.

Objectives of the Project

  1. Identify how influencer micro-communities influence brand loyalty among Gen Z and Millennials.
  2. Assess the impact of these communities on purchase intent for products in a chosen industry.
  3. Compare differences between Gen Z and Millennials in responses to micro-influencers.
  4. Provide actionable marketing guidelines for leveraging micro-communities.

What You Will Do Step by Step

  1. Review existing literature on influencer marketing and micro-communities.
  2. Design a simple survey or interview guide aimed at Gen Z and Millennial participants.
  3. Collect data from a sample of consumers exposed to micro-influencers in the chosen industry.
  4. Analyze results to identify patterns in loyalty and purchase intent.
  5. Compare responses between Gen Z and Millennials and note notable differences.
  6. Draft practical recommendations for brands and summarize limitations.

Expected Outcome

The project should clarify whether micro-communities strengthen brand loyalty and drive purchases, and show how effects vary by generation. The outcome will offer straightforward guidance for marketers on selecting micro-influencers and tailoring messages to Gen Z vs. Millennials, with implications for campaign budgeting and measurement.
