Project Abstract
Development journalism plays a crucial role in shaping narratives and discourse surrounding rural development. This study aims to explore the significance of development journalism as a pre-requisite for rural development. By focusing on the role of media in highlighting rural issues, advocating for sustainable development practices, and fostering community engagement, this research seeks to underscore the indispensable nature of development journalism in driving positive change in rural areas. Through a comprehensive review of literature on development journalism, rural development strategies, and media effects on society, this study aims to provide insights into how the media can serve as a catalyst for rural development efforts. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative content analysis of development journalism pieces with interviews and surveys of journalists, development practitioners, and community members. By analyzing the content of development journalism pieces, the study aims to identify key themes, framing techniques, and discursive strategies employed in reporting on rural development issues. Additionally, interviews and surveys will offer perspectives from key stakeholders on the role of the media in promoting rural development, as well as the challenges and opportunities faced by journalists reporting on these issues. Through this research, the study seeks to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the intersection of media, development, and rural communities. By highlighting the importance of development journalism in fostering inclusive and sustainable rural development practices, this research aims to inform policy-makers, journalists, and practitioners on the critical role that media plays in advancing rural development goals. Ultimately, this study aims to advocate for greater support and recognition of development journalism as a vital tool for driving positive change in rural areas.
