PROJECT TOPIC: AN ASSESSMENT OF LEVEL OF LANGUAGE ENDANGERMENT IN NIGERIA

Project Abstract

Language endangerment is a critical issue globally, with many languages facing the risk of extinction due to various socio-cultural and economic factors. Nigeria, being one of the most linguistically diverse countries in the world, is home to over 500 languages, making it a hotspot for language endangerment assessment. This study aims to assess the level of language endangerment in Nigeria by examining the current status of various Nigerian languages and identifying the factors contributing to their endangerment. The research methodology will involve a comprehensive review of existing literature on language endangerment, language vitality, and language documentation in Nigeria. Additionally, fieldwork will be conducted in selected communities to gather primary data on the usage, transmission, and attitudes towards endangered languages. Surveys, interviews, and language assessments will be used to collect data from language speakers, community members, and language experts. The findings of this study will provide valuable insights into the level of language endangerment in Nigeria and contribute to the existing body of knowledge on endangered languages. The results will help identify the most endangered languages in Nigeria and the factors that have led to their decline. Furthermore, the study aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving endangered languages and to propose strategies for language revitalization and preservation. By understanding the level of language endangerment in Nigeria, policymakers, linguists, and language advocates can develop targeted interventions to support endangered languages and promote linguistic diversity.
