Project Abstract

Semantic shifts in language are indicative of evolving cultural, social, and technological influences, and Nigerian Pidgin English, as a vibrant creole language, exemplifies these dynamic linguistic changes. This study investigates the nature, causes, and implications of semantic shifts within contemporary Nigerian Pidgin English through a comprehensive qualitative and quantitative analysis. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining corpus-based lexical analysis with ethnographic interviews and surveys to capture both linguistic data and speaker perspectives. The primary data comprises a corpus of Nigerian Pidgin language use collected from social media platforms, radio broadcasts, and conversational transcripts across different socio-economic groups in Nigeria. Secondary data includes existing literature, dictionaries, and linguistic descriptions of Nigerian Pidgin English.
