Project Abstract
Libraries are essential spaces for learning, research, and community engagement. However, librarians often encounter difficult patrons who disrupt the library environment. This research project aims to explore the various dealing strategies employed by librarians when facing challenging patrons and to analyze the outcomes of these strategies. The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted with librarians from different types of libraries to gather insights into the strategies they use when dealing with difficult patrons. Additionally, surveys will be distributed to library staff members to collect quantitative data on the frequency of encounters with challenging patrons and the effectiveness of various strategies. The findings of this research will provide valuable insights into the common types of difficult patron behaviors encountered in libraries, as well as the strategies that librarians find most effective in managing these situations. By understanding the experiences of library staff members and the outcomes of different dealing strategies, this study aims to contribute to the development of best practices for handling difficult patrons in the library environment. Overall, this research project seeks to enhance the knowledge and skills of librarians in managing challenging patron interactions, ultimately creating a more positive and conducive library environment for all users.
