Project Abstract

The relationship between diet and brain development, particularly in terms of intelligence quotient (IQ), has been a topic of interest for researchers across various disciplines. This review explores diets that have been found to enhance IQ and promote brain development in individuals, with a focus on both children and adults. The impact of specific nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, on cognitive function and IQ is examined. Additionally, the role of overall dietary patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet, in supporting brain health and cognitive abilities is discussed. Research suggests that omega-3 fatty acids, particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), play a crucial role in brain development and function. These fatty acids are found in fatty fish, nuts, and seeds, and studies have shown that higher intake is associated with improved cognitive performance and higher IQ levels. Antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, as well as minerals like zinc and iron, have also been linked to cognitive function and may contribute to enhancing IQ. Furthermore, the Mediterranean diet, characterized by high consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, and olive oil, has been associated with various health benefits, including improved cognitive function. This dietary pattern provides a rich source of nutrients that support brain health and may help in boosting IQ levels. In contrast, diets high in processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats have been linked to cognitive decline and may have a negative impact on IQ. The review also considers the importance of early nutrition in brain development, highlighting the role of breastfeeding and nutrient-rich foods in supporting cognitive function in infants and young children. Studies suggest that maternal diet during pregnancy and lactation can influence the cognitive abilities of offspring, emphasizing the significance of a healthy diet for both mothers and their children. In conclusion, diet plays a critical role in enhancing IQ and promoting brain development across the lifespan. Consuming a nutrient-dense diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, as well as following healthy dietary patterns like the Mediterranean diet, may contribute to improved cognitive function and higher IQ levels. Early nutrition is particularly important for brain development, underscoring the importance of a well-balanced diet from infancy through adulthood.
