This study investigates the nutritional status and dietary patterns of adolescents residing in urban communities, aiming to identify prevalent nutritional issues and their underlying dietary behaviors. Given the rapid urbanization and lifestyle transitions characteristic of many cities, adolescents are increasingly exposed to dietary challenges such as malnutrition, obesity, and micronutrient deficiencies, which can have long-term health implications. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to provide a comprehensive understanding of adolescents’ nutritional profiles and eating habits. A cross-sectional study design was utilized, involving a sample size of 500 adolescents aged 10 to 19 years, selected through stratified random sampling from various urban neighborhoods. Data collection tools included structured questionnaires addressing dietary intake, meal frequency, and food choices, alongside anthropometric measurements such as height, weight, and body mass index (BMI). Dietary patterns revealed a trend towards increased consumption of processed foods high in sugars, fats, and salt, coupled with inadequate intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Meal skipping and irregular eating patterns were common, often attributed to academic pressures and peer influence. Nutritional deficiencies, particularly iron and vitamin A deficiencies, were prevalent among undernourished adolescents, while overnutrition was associated with high intake of calorie-dense fast foods. The study also identified socioeconomic factors, such as parental education and household income, as significant determinants of dietary patterns and nutritional status. Adolescents engaged in excessive sedentary activities exhibited higher rates of overweight and obesity. The research emphasizes the need for targeted nutritional interventions, school-based nutrition education programs, and policy measures to promote healthier dietary behaviors among urban adolescents. Findings contribute valuable insights into the complex interplay between urbanization, dietary habits, and adolescent health, underscoring the importance of comprehensive strategies to address the dual burden of malnutrition.
