Project Abstract
This project aims to investigate the effectiveness of group counselling in improving the mental health of adolescents. Adolescence is a critical period of development marked by significant physical, emotional, and social changes, and it is a time when mental health issues often emerge. Research has shown that mental health problems during adolescence can have long-lasting consequences, affecting academic performance, social relationships, and overall well-being. Therefore, it is crucial to explore evidence-based interventions that can support adolescents' mental health and promote their successful transition into adulthood. Group counselling has been identified as a promising approach for addressing adolescent mental health concerns. By providing a supportive and collaborative environment, group counselling can help adolescents develop essential coping strategies, build social connections, and gain a better understanding of their own experiences and emotions. Additionally, group settings can foster a sense of belonging and reduce the feelings of isolation often associated with mental health challenges. This project aims to evaluate the impact of a group counselling intervention on various aspects of adolescent mental health, including symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress, as well as improvements in self-esteem, emotional regulation, and overall well-being. The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative measures and qualitative interviews to gain a comprehensive understanding of the intervention's effectiveness. The project will recruit a diverse sample of adolescents, aged 13 to 18, from local schools and community organizations. Participants will be randomly assigned to either a group counselling intervention or a control group. The group counselling sessions will be facilitated by trained mental health professionals and will cover topics such as stress management, emotional expression, and interpersonal skills. Pre- and post-intervention assessments will be conducted to measure changes in participants' mental health. Standardized questionnaires will be used to evaluate depression, anxiety, and stress levels, as well as self-esteem and emotional regulation. Additionally, qualitative interviews will be conducted with a subset of participants to gain a deeper understanding of their experiences and perceptions of the group counselling process. The findings of this project will have significant implications for both research and practice in the field of adolescent mental health. By exploring the efficacy of group counselling, the study will contribute to the growing body of evidence supporting the use of group-based interventions as a cost-effective and accessible approach to addressing mental health concerns among adolescents. Furthermore, the project will provide valuable insights into the specific mechanisms and processes through which group counselling can positively impact adolescent mental health. These insights can inform the development of more targeted and tailored interventions, as well as guide the training and support of mental health professionals working with this population. Overall, this project represents a crucial step in understanding and addressing the mental health needs of adolescents, with the ultimate goal of promoting their overall well-being and successful transition into adulthood.
