Project Abstract

Examination malpractice in tertiary institutions has become a pervasive issue globally, with detrimental effects on educational quality and integrity. This research aims to explore the problems associated with examination malpractice in tertiary institutions, focusing on the underlying causes, prevalence rates, and its impact on the academic environment. Through a comprehensive literature review and data analysis, this study identifies various factors contributing to the prevalence of examination malpractice, including societal pressure, lack of ethics, inadequate supervision, and the pursuit of high grades at all costs. The research highlights the role of technology in facilitating new forms of cheating, such as online plagiarism and the use of electronic devices during examinations. Furthermore, the study examines the impact of examination malpractice on the academic environment, including erosion of trust among stakeholders, devaluation of academic credentials, and compromised learning outcomes. The research also explores the psychological effects on students, such as increased stress and anxiety due to the pressure to cheat. In addition, the study investigates the existing strategies and mechanisms employed by tertiary institutions to combat examination malpractice, including the use of invigilators, proctoring software, and the implementation of honor codes. The research evaluates the effectiveness of these measures and identifies gaps that may contribute to the persistence of malpractice. The findings of this research underscore the need for a multi-faceted approach to address the problems of examination malpractice in tertiary institutions. Recommendations include strengthening ethical education, promoting a culture of academic integrity, enhancing supervision during examinations, and leveraging technology to deter cheating. Overall, this research contributes to the existing body of knowledge on examination malpractice in tertiary institutions by providing a comprehensive analysis of the problems and proposing evidence-based solutions to combat this pervasive issue. By addressing the root causes and consequences of malpractice, this study aims to promote a culture of academic honesty and uphold the integrity of the education system.
