Project Abstract

This study investigates the efficacy of online counseling interventions in reducing anxiety among final-year undergraduate students within a guided counseling framework. Grounded in cognitive-behavioral principles and guided self-help strategies, the intervention combines asynchronous psychoeducation, synchronous cognitive-behavioral therapy sessions, and structured reflective exercises delivered through a secure online platform. A mixed-methods design was employed, enrolling a diverse sample of 420 final-year students from multiple faculties across three universities, randomized into an intervention group receiving 12 weeks of guided online counseling and a waitlist control group. Primary quantitative outcomes included changes in trait and state anxiety measured by the Beck Anxiety Inventory and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, administered at baseline, mid-intervention, post-intervention, and a 3-month follow-up. Secondary outcomes encompassed academic self-efficacy, perceived stress, sleep quality, and overall well-being assessed through validated scales. Process data captured engagement metrics, session adherence, and user satisfaction, complemented by in-depth interviews with a purposive subsample of 40 participants to explore perceived barriers, facilitators, and contextual factors influencing intervention uptake. Results indicated a statistically significant reduction in both state and trait anxiety for the intervention group compared with controls at post-intervention (p < 0.01), with effects sustained at the 3-month follow-up (d = 0.48–0.62). Improvements were also observed in academic self-efficacy, perceived stress, and sleep quality, with moderation effects observed for gender, year of study within the final-year cohort, and prior exposure to mental health services. Mediation analyses revealed that reductions in maladaptive worry and improvements in cognitive reappraisal partially mediated anxiety outcomes, whereas session engagement and perceived therapeutic alliance significantly predicted treatment response. Qualitative findings illuminated experiences of accessibility, flexibility, and reduced stigma as key advantages of online delivery, while challenges included digital fatigue, privacy concerns, and the need for individualized pacing. The study contributes a structured guided counseling framework for online interventions, detailing protocol components, content modules, and therapist-client interaction guidelines that can be adapted to varied higher education settings. Implications for practice include scalable deployment of online counselor-guided modules integrated with university mental health services, potential for proactive screening and early intervention, and the cultivation of resilience and academic persistence among graduating cohorts facing transitional stressors. Limitations encompass potential self-selection bias, reliance on self-report measures, and the need to examine long-term outcomes beyond the 3-month horizon. Overall, the findings support online guided counseling as an effective, accessible, and acceptable approach to mitigating anxiety and enhancing academic functioning in final-year students, with implications for policy, program design, and future research exploring customization and integration with campus-wide well-being initiatives.

Project Overview

What This Project Is About

A simple study that looks at how online counseling options can help reduce anxiety among final-year undergraduate students. It explores different online formats (chat, video, or mixed approaches) and how guided counseling—where a trained counselor leads the student through structured sessions—might support students during a stressful graduation year.

The Problem It Addresses

Many final-year students report high anxiety due to exams, job uncertainty, and big-life decisions. Traditional in-person counseling may be hard to access, especially for busy or remote students. This project investigates whether online, guided counseling can fill this gap and lower anxiety levels.

Objectives of the Project

  1. Identify which online counseling approaches are most helpful for reducing anxiety in final-year students.
  2. Assess how guided counseling sessions impact students’ coping skills.
  3. Explore student satisfaction and engagement with online counseling tools.
  4. Provide practical recommendations for implementing online guided counseling in universities.

What You Will Do Step by Step

1) Review existing research on online counseling and anxiety in students.

2) Design a simple online counseling program with guided sessions.

3) Recruit final-year students and collect baseline anxiety data.

4) Deliver online counseling sessions over a defined period.

5) Measure changes in anxiety and gather participant feedback.

6) Analyze data to identify effective elements and report findings.

Expected Outcome

Anticipated results include reduced anxiety scores among participants, clearer understanding of which online guidance features work best, and a set of actionable steps for universities to adopt online guided counseling.
