Project Abstract

Digital counseling platforms have emerged as transformative tools in higher education, offering scalable access to personalized guidance for final-year students navigating academic decisions, career planning, and transition to professional life. This study adopts a convergent mixed-methods design to evaluate the effectiveness of digital counseling interventions on academic guidance outcomes, including decision clarity, perceived support, satisfaction with guidance, and preparedness for post-graduate pathways. A sequential sampling strategy was employed to recruit final-year undergraduates from three faculties at a large public university, with 320 participants completing a structured online survey and 40 participants engaging in in-depth semi-structured interviews to illuminate nuanced experiences and contextual factors. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, and multiple regression to assess associations between engagement with digital platforms (frequency, features used, duration) and outcomes while controlling for demographic and academic covariates. Qualitative data were analyzed through thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns related to usability, trust, inclusivity, and the perceived quality of guidance, followed by joint display integration to juxtapose quantitative results with qualitative insights. The findings indicate that regular use of digital counseling platforms is positively associated with heightened decision-making confidence, perceived timeliness of guidance, and overall satisfaction with the guidance process. Features such as personalized action plans, asynchronous chat with counselors, and curated resource libraries emerged as particularly impactful in enhancing studentsโ€™ sense of agency and readiness for graduation and employment. However, barriers persist, including digital literacy gaps, perceived anonymity concerns, and uneven counselor responsiveness, which moderated the strength of outcomes for certain subgroups (e.g., international students, non-traditional learners). Qualitative insights reveal that students value holistic guidance that integrates academic planning with career exploration and mental well-being support, while emphasizing the need for culturally sensitive and context-specific guidance that aligns with local labor markets. The study contributes to theory by extending guidance and counseling frameworks to digital ecosystems, illustrating how platform design, humanโ€“computer interaction, and counselor strategies co-create outcomes. Practically, the results offer actionable recommendations for universities to optimize digital counseling services implement tiered support models combining automated triage with human follow-up, enhance user onboarding and digital literacy training, ensure equitable access across modalities, and foster ongoing counselor development in digital communication and culturally responsive practice. The research also informs policy discussions on safeguarding data privacy, ensuring ethical use of digital guidance analytics, and integrating digital platforms with traditional counseling services for a seamless student support experience. Limitations include the cross-sectional nature of the survey data, potential self-selection bias among participants with higher engagement, and the contextual specificity of a single institution. Future research should consider longitudinal designs, comparative analyses across multiple institutions, and exploration of platform-specific features on diverse student populations. Overall, the study demonstrates that well-designed digital counseling platforms can significantly strengthen final-year studentsโ€™ academic guidance outcomes when aligned with inclusive practices, robust support infrastructures, and continuous evaluation.

Project Overview

What This Project Is About
A plain-language overview of how digital counseling tools can support final-year students in planning and receiving guidance for academics, career choices, and upcoming transitions to work or further study. The project compares online counseling platforms with traditional face-to-face guidance to see which helps students make better decisions and feel more supported.

The Problem It Addresses
Many final-year students struggle to access timely, personalized guidance due to limited campus resources. Digital counseling platforms may offer scalable, convenient support, but itโ€™s unclear how well they improve outcomes like decision confidence, satisfaction with guidance, and academic planning. This project investigates whether digital options enhance guidance effectiveness and student well-being.

Objectives of the Project

  1. Assess student satisfaction with digital versus traditional counseling.
  2. Measure changes in decision confidence and clarity about next steps.
  3. Explore how students use digital platforms for academic and career planning.
  4. Identify barriers to using digital counseling and ways to improve access.

What You Will Do Step by Step

  1. Review existing literature on counseling methods and digital platforms.
  2. Design a study comparing two groups: digital platform users and non-users.
  3. Collect data through surveys and brief interviews.
  4. Analyze quantitative data for patterns and qualitative data for insights.
  5. Interpret findings and discuss practical implications for universities.

Expected Outcome

The project should show whether digital counseling platforms improve satisfaction, decision-making confidence, and planning for final-year students, and provide recommendations to implement or improve such tools in campuses.
