Project Abstract

Project Overview

What This Project Is About

A beginner-friendly overview of using smart network models that learn from distributed data to detect unusual behavior in devices connected to the internet. It explores how to forecast potential security events in an industrial setting without sending all data to a central server.

The Problem It Addresses

Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices often create large, sensitive data streams and may be targeted by cyber threats. Centralized data collection raises privacy and security concerns and can be a bottleneck. This project seeks a way to identify threats while keeping data local to each device or site.

Objectives of the Project

  1. Understand the basics of neural networks and federated learning in simple terms.
  2. Explore how to detect suspicious device behavior using distributed data.
  3. Design a lightweight framework that can run on typical industrial hardware.
  4. Test the approach with mock data and evaluate its accuracy and speed.
  5. Discuss privacy, security, and practical deployment considerations.

What You Will Do Step by Step

  1. Learn foundational concepts about neural networks and distributed learning.
  2. Collect or simulate data reflecting normal and abnormal device behavior.
  3. Build a small federated learning model that trains across multiple sites without sharing raw data.
  4. Train the model and measure how well it detects anomalies and predicts incidents.
  5. Analyze results, compare with a non-federated approach, and identify trade-offs.
  6. Assess deployment considerations like computation needs and privacy.

Expected Outcome

Deliverables include a working demo of a federated anomaly-detection system, a report explaining its accuracy and privacy benefits, and guidelines for deploying in real factories.
