Project Abstract

Construction and demolition activities have far-reaching impacts on the environment, economy, and society. This research project aims to analyze and evaluate the various dimensions of the impact of construction and demolition waste on sustainability. The study will investigate the environmental consequences of construction and demolition waste generation, including issues related to resource depletion, air and water pollution, and land degradation. Furthermore, the economic implications of managing construction and demolition waste will be assessed, considering costs associated with disposal, recycling, and potential revenue from recovered materials. Additionally, the societal aspects of construction and demolition activities will be explored, focusing on the health and safety risks for workers and nearby communities. The research will also delve into the social responsibility of construction companies in managing waste and promoting sustainable practices. By examining these different facets, this project seeks to provide insights into the overall impact of construction and demolition activities on sustainability and identify opportunities for improvement. The methodology for this research will involve a combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data will be collected from various sources, including government reports, industry publications, and interviews with stakeholders in the construction and demolition sectors. Statistical analysis will be used to assess the volume and composition of construction and demolition waste, as well as the environmental and economic indicators associated with its management. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on construction and demolition waste management and sustainability. By highlighting the environmental, economic, and societal impacts of construction and demolition activities, this research aims to raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities in this area. The results will be valuable for policymakers, industry professionals, and other stakeholders seeking to improve the sustainability of construction practices. In conclusion, this research project will provide a comprehensive analysis of the impact of construction and demolition activities on sustainability. By examining the environmental, economic, and societal dimensions of construction and demolition waste, this study aims to shed light on the challenges and opportunities in managing waste from these activities. Ultimately, the findings of this research will contribute to the development of strategies for promoting sustainable construction practices and reducing the negative impacts of construction and demolition on the environment, economy, and society.

Project Overview

INTRODUCTION

Historically, construction and demolition (C&D) debris landfills have been considered nonhazardous operations, containing relatively inert wastes such as concrete, asphalt, wood, metals, gypsum drywall, and roofing materials. In recent years, however, it has become increasingly clear that emissions resulting from the decomposition of gypsum drywall and organic debris are a public health issue. Drywall, comprised of gypsum (CaSO4 •2H2 O), breaks down into hydrogen sulfide and other sulfur compounds under anaerobic conditions and in the presence of water.

Overall, the good news is that C&D landfills are not known for being particularly dangerous to human health, though certainly they do come with their risks (Colledge & Wilder 2011). In each of the case studies from New York, Wisconsin and Virginia (mentioned above) where a C&D landfill was identified to pose potential health risks to the community, there were problems with the ENST 698, fall 2011 facilities that could have been prevented or fixed (United States Environmental Protection Agency Office of Solid Waste 1995). ”
