Project Abstract
Methane emissions from landfills in Nigeria have become a significant environmental concern due to their contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. This research project aimed to assess the effect of methane emissions from landfills in Nigeria by examining the current trends in waste management practices, landfill design, and the implementation of methane capture technologies. The study utilized a combination of field measurements, data analysis, and modeling to quantify methane emissions from landfills in different regions of Nigeria. The findings revealed that inadequate waste management practices, such as open dumping and insufficient landfill gas collection systems, have led to substantial methane emissions from landfills in Nigeria. The study also highlighted the importance of landfill design and engineering in mitigating methane emissions, emphasizing the need for properly engineered landfill cells, gas collection systems, and landfill cover materials to minimize methane release into the atmosphere. Furthermore, the research project investigated the effectiveness of methane capture technologies, such as landfill gas collection systems and flaring, in reducing methane emissions from landfills in Nigeria. The results indicated that while some landfills have implemented gas collection systems, their efficiency varied significantly, with many systems being poorly maintained or non-operational. This has resulted in a considerable amount of methane being released into the atmosphere, contributing to the overall greenhouse gas emissions in Nigeria. In conclusion, the study underscores the urgent need for improved waste management practices, enhanced landfill design, and the proper implementation of methane capture technologies to mitigate methane emissions from landfills in Nigeria. Effective measures such as increasing the coverage of engineered landfills, optimizing gas collection systems, and promoting the use of alternative waste treatment technologies are crucial in reducing methane emissions and combating climate change in the country. This research provides valuable insights for policymakers, environmental agencies, and waste management authorities to develop strategies and regulations aimed at reducing methane emissions from landfills in Nigeria and promoting sustainable waste management practices.
