Project Abstract

As urban areas continue to grow globally, the lack of vegetation and presence of heat-absorbing infrastructure like buildings and roads have led to the formation of urban heat islands where temperatures are significantly higher than surrounding rural areas. This phenomenon exacerbates the impacts of heat waves and increases energy consumption for cooling. This project aims to investigate strategies for improving urban greening through expanding parks and green spaces, promoting rooftop gardens and green walls, and increasing the urban tree canopy. Case studies of cities that have implemented successful urban greening programs will be analyzed to identify best practices. The potential for urban greening to reduce temperatures, improve air quality, promote active transportation and public health will also be explored.
