Project Abstract

Flood hazard mapping and risk management are crucial aspects of urban planning in flood-prone areas to mitigate the impact of flooding events. Lagos State, being a coastal region in Nigeria, faces significant challenges related to flooding due to its topography, rapid urbanization, and climate change effects. This research project focuses on flood hazard mapping and risk management in selected parts of Lagos State to provide valuable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and residents. The study employs Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing techniques to develop accurate flood hazard maps for the target areas. By analyzing topographic data, land use patterns, rainfall intensity, and drainage systems, the research team identifies high-risk zones prone to flooding. These hazard maps serve as essential tools for decision-makers to implement effective risk reduction strategies and emergency response plans. Furthermore, the research investigates the socio-economic impacts of flooding in the study areas to understand the vulnerabilities of communities and infrastructure. By conducting surveys, interviews, and data analysis, the study assesses the level of preparedness, awareness, and resilience of the population towards flood events. This information is critical for designing tailored risk management strategies that consider the local context and community needs. In terms of risk management, the project evaluates existing flood control measures and infrastructure in Lagos State. By assessing the efficiency of drainage systems, early warning systems, and emergency response protocols, the research identifies strengths and weaknesses in the current flood risk management framework. Recommendations are made to enhance flood resilience, improve infrastructure maintenance, and establish community-based disaster preparedness programs. Overall, the research contributes to the field of flood hazard mapping and risk management by providing a comprehensive analysis of the challenges faced in Lagos State. By integrating scientific data with socio-economic factors, the study offers a holistic approach to understanding and addressing flood risks in urban environments. The findings aim to support sustainable urban development, climate adaptation strategies, and community resilience initiatives in flood-prone areas of Lagos State.

Project Overview

<p> flood hazard mapping : The prevalence of flooding within Nigeria which has been generally attributed to climate change and poor urban planningis an issue of critical importance within the context of national development.Over the period 1985 to 2014, flooding in Nigeria has affected more than 11 million lives with a total of 1100 deaths and property damage exceeding US$17 billion. Although more frequent floods are recorded in Niger, Adamawa, Oyo, Kano and Jigawa states possibly due to the influence of rivers Niger, Benue, Ogun and Hadeja, Lagos state seems to have experienced most of the floods in the country. With rapid population growth and urbanization in the country the risk of flooding to human lives and properties assumes critical dimensions.Critically, poor awareness of the hazard is a major impasse towards its management. This creates a significant gap in the knowledge of how to improve on the current efforts towards addressing the challenges of flooding in Nigeria. Since attempts to tackle the hazard appear to be limited, the present study is driven by the need to identify those limitations in the flood management efforts in Nigeria. Possible way-forward are suggested based on a critical review of flooding and its management in Nigeria, allied with globally acknowledged ‘best practices’ in flood risk reduction and lessons learned from other countries’ experiences of flooding. <br></p>
