Project Abstract
Air pollution is a significant environmental issue, particularly in industrial areas where emissions from various sources affect air quality and public health. This study focuses on air pollution control within an industrial environment, specifically at the Port Harcourt Refinery in Rivers State, Nigeria. The aim of this research is to investigate the current air pollution control measures in place at the refinery and propose recommendations for improvement. The study employs a case study approach, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods to gather data. Interviews with key personnel at the refinery, as well as on-site observations and air quality measurements, are conducted to assess the existing air pollution control strategies. Additionally, literature review and analysis of relevant environmental policies and regulations are carried out to provide a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. Preliminary findings indicate that the Port Harcourt Refinery has implemented several air pollution control measures, including the use of emission control devices and regular monitoring of air quality. However, there are areas for improvement, such as enhancing maintenance practices, investing in advanced pollution control technologies, and increasing public transparency regarding emissions data. Based on the research findings, recommendations are proposed to enhance air pollution control at the refinery. These recommendations include improving maintenance procedures for emission control devices, adopting cleaner production techniques, and enhancing community engagement through the dissemination of air quality information. Furthermore, it is suggested that the refinery should align its practices with international best practices and comply with local environmental regulations to reduce its environmental impact. In conclusion, this research contributes to the ongoing discourse on air pollution control within industrial environments, with a specific focus on the Port Harcourt Refinery in Rivers State. By evaluating the current air pollution control measures and proposing recommendations for improvement, this study aims to support efforts to mitigate the environmental and public health impacts of industrial activities. Implementing the suggested recommendations can lead to enhanced air quality, reduced health risks, and improved environmental sustainability within the refinery and its surrounding community.
