Project Abstract

This study explores the dynamic representations of postcolonial identity in contemporary African literature, analyzing how authors navigate and depict the complex processes of cultural reclamation, identity reconstruction, and historical consciousness in post-independence Africa. It investigates a diverse corpus of works from prominent African writers such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Ng?g? wa Thiong’o, Tsitsi Dangarembga, and Chinua Achebe, among others, focusing on texts published from the late 20th century to the present day. The research employs a multidisciplinary approach, integrating literary analysis with postcolonial theory, cultural studies, and identity politics to unravel the nuanced ways these authors address issues of ethnicity, migration, language, gender, and globalization. In doing so, it highlights the evolving nature of African identity amidst political upheavals, economic challenges, and the ongoing legacy of colonialism. The study systematically examines themes such as cultural hybridity, resistance narratives, language revival, and the portrayal of traditional versus modern identities, illustrating how these elements are negotiated within the literary space to reflect a continuum of identity reconstruction. The research also emphasizes the role of narrative techniques, symbolism, and character development in conveying postcolonial struggles and triumphs, illustrating that contemporary African literature is a vital site for contesting and redefining national and personal identities in a rapidly changing continent.
