Project Abstract

This study investigates how digital payment adoption influences the growth trajectories of small businesses and their formalization status across a diverse set of emerging economies, using a cross-country comparative framework that integrates micro-level firm data with macro-level policy indicators. By leveraging a panel dataset of small and micro enterprises from 15 emerging economies over a decade, the research identifies the channels through which digital payments affect firm performance, including transaction efficiency, access to finance, consumer trust, and market reach. The analysis deploys a multilevel econometric model to account for heterogeneity across countries and sectors, incorporating firm-level characteristics (size, age, sector, digitization readiness), policy environments (regulatory quality, digital infrastructure, financial inclusion programs), and payment ecosystem factors (merchant acceptance, interoperability, and payment costs). The study tests hypotheses on (i) the positive impact of digital payment adoption on sales growth, productivity, and profitability; (ii) the differential effects on informal firms versus formal firms, and the potential transformation from informal to formal status; and (iii) the moderating role of financial inclusion policies and digital literacy initiatives in enhancing the effectiveness of digital payments. Robustness checks include instrumental variable approaches to address endogeneity, propensity score matching to compare similar firms across different levels of payment adoption, and falsification tests using placebo periods and alternative definitions of adoption intensity. The results are expected to show that higher adoption of digital payments correlates with improved cash flow management, larger average transaction values, reduced cash handling costs, and better access to credit, which collectively contribute to higher growth rates and a greater likelihood of formalization for previously informal firms. However, the magnitude of these effects is anticipated to vary with institutional quality, digital infrastructure, and the prevalence of cash-based transactions in consumer behavior. The study contributes to the literature by offering cross-country evidence on the growth-inclusivity linkage of digital payments, clarifying the role of policy complementarities in accelerating formalization, and informing policymakers and practitioners about targeted interventions—such as merchant onboarding incentives, interoperable platforms, and digital literacy programs—that can maximize the developmental impact of digital payments in emerging economies. The findings have implications for the design of inclusive digital finance strategies, the allocation of resources toward digital infrastructure, and the prioritization of regulatory reforms to foster formalization and sustainable small business growth in heterogeneous macroeconomic environments.

Project Overview

What This Project Is About

A plain-language overview of how digital payment systems affect small businesses in emerging economies, focusing on growth and informality across several countries. The project compares firms that adopt digital payments with those that don’t, looking at sales, expansion, and whether digital tools reduce informal practices like cash-only transactions or unregistered receipts.

The Problem It Addresses

Many small firms in developing regions struggle to grow because they face barriers to using formal financial services. Digital payments could help them track sales, access customers, and formalize operations, but there is limited cross-country evidence on how this translates into growth and lower informality. This project fills that gap by examining multiple countries and identifying consistent patterns.

Objectives of the Project

  1. Assess how widespread digital payment adoption is among small businesses in selected emerging economies.
  2. Measure the impact of digital payments on firm growth indicators such as revenue, customer base, and market reach.
  3. Evaluate whether digital payments influence the level of informality, including licensing, record-keeping, and tax compliance.
  4. Identify country-specific factors that enhance or hinder the benefits of digital payments.

What You Will Do Step by Step

1. Review literature on digital payments and small business performance. 2. Collect cross-country data from surveys and official sources. 3. Create comparable metrics for growth and informality. 4. Use basic statistical tools to compare adopters and non-adopters. 5. Control for differences across countries (economy size, tech infrastructure). 6. Interpret results and check robustness with alternative models. 7. Discuss policy implications and practical recommendations.

Expected Outcome

Clear evidence on whether digital payment adoption supports small business growth and reduces informality, plus practical guidelines for governments and firms on how to encourage adoption and maximize benefits.
