Project Abstract
The abstract This study investigates the proximate and the effect of labour unionism on the administration of Obafemi Awolowo University (O.A.U.), Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Labour unionism is a significant aspect of the university administration as it plays a crucial role in shaping policies, advocating for the rights of workers, and influencing decision-making processes. The study aims to explore the relationship between labour unionism and the administrative functions of the university, with a focus on the challenges and opportunities that arise from this interaction. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research collects data through surveys, interviews, and document analysis. The study examines the historical context of labour unionism at O.A.U. and its evolution over time. It also assesses the current state of labour relations within the university and the impact of union activities on administrative processes. By analyzing the perspectives of administrators, union leaders, and staff members, the research seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics between labour unionism and university administration. The findings reveal that labour unionism at O.A.U. has both positive and negative effects on the university administration. On the one hand, unions have been instrumental in advocating for improved working conditions, fair wages, and benefits for staff members. They have also played a key role in fostering a sense of solidarity among workers and promoting social justice within the university community. However, the study also highlights challenges such as frequent strikes, conflicts with management, and disruptions to academic activities that arise from labour union activities. The research concludes with recommendations for enhancing the relationship between labour unions and university administration at O.A.U. These include fostering dialogue and collaboration between union leaders and administrators, developing conflict resolution mechanisms, and promoting a culture of mutual respect and understanding. By addressing these issues, the study aims to contribute to the improvement of labour relations and the overall effectiveness of the university administration. Overall, this research provides valuable insights into the complex dynamics of labour unionism in the context of university governance and sheds light on the challenges and opportunities it presents for administrative processes.
