Project Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effect of parental monitoring on sexual abstinence among female students in secondary schools. The research utilized a quantitative approach with a sample of 300 female students aged 14-18 from different secondary schools. The participants completed a survey questionnaire that included items on parental monitoring behaviors, communication with parents about sexual matters, and sexual abstinence practices. The results indicated a significant positive relationship between parental monitoring and sexual abstinence among female students. Specifically, higher levels of parental monitoring were associated with a higher likelihood of practicing sexual abstinence. Moreover, the study found that open communication between parents and adolescents about sexual issues played a mediating role in the relationship between parental monitoring and sexual abstinence. These findings suggest that parental monitoring is a crucial factor in promoting sexual abstinence among female students in secondary schools. Parents who actively monitor their children's activities and maintain open communication about sexual matters are more likely to influence their daughters' decisions to abstain from sexual activity. Therefore, interventions aimed at promoting sexual abstinence among adolescents should emphasize the importance of parental monitoring and communication within the family unit. The implications of this study are significant for parents, educators, and policymakers involved in adolescent sexual health promotion. By recognizing the impact of parental monitoring on sexual behavior, stakeholders can develop targeted interventions to support parents in fostering healthy decision-making among adolescents. Additionally, the findings highlight the need for comprehensive sexuality education programs that incorporate parental involvement to reinforce messages about sexual abstinence. Future research in this area could explore the role of other factors, such as peer influences and individual characteristics, in shaping adolescents' decisions regarding sexual abstinence. Longitudinal studies could also provide insights into the long-term effects of parental monitoring on sexual behavior among female students. Overall, this study contributes to the existing literature on adolescent sexual health by underscoring the importance of parental monitoring in promoting sexual abstinence among female students in secondary schools.
